Influencer Marketing

5. personal identity, personal branding and social media

An influencer is an individual who has the power to affect others because of his/ her authority, position, simple fame or relationship with his/her audience. Nowadays they are strongly related with social media.

Over the last decade we have seen social media grow rapidly in importance.  According to the August 2017 Global Digital Statshot from We Are Social and Hootsuite, 3.028 Billion people actively use social media - that’s 40% of the world’s population. Inevitably these people look up to influencers in social media to guide them with their decision making.

A lot of influencers have built a reputation for their knowledge and expertise on a particular topic. We can see them for example in youtube, where they make regular posts talking about their topic of expertise. Some other influencers in social media just gain followers for their aspect, look and clothing style and they gain followers posting pictures in instagram.

An important aspect about influencers is personal branding. They don't belong to any company. They are their own brand. They practice what is called “Self-packaging”. They establish a prescribed image or impression in the mind of the others about themselves.

These people take advantage of their influence.  In an era where consumers have never been hungrier for reviews, ratings, and word-of-mouth recommendations, influencers are the key to unlocking their trust in brands. That’s why they practice influencer marketing.

Influencer marketing is a form of marketing in which focus is placed on influential people rather than the target market as a whole on social media. It identifies the individuals that have influence over potential customers, and orients marketing activities around these influencers

They have the trust of their audience to guide them towards loving, listening or leaving brands. They play a critical role in creating relevant customer dialogue with those.

The campaigns are usually collaborations between influencers and brands in which them represents the brand. Influencer content may be framed as testimonial advertising. They present themselves as a potential buyer. Explaining their thoughts about the product or they can show up as a customer of that brand.

Influencer marketing is rapidly gaining popularity. In 2015, Schlesinger Associates released a study in which 84% of marketers said they would launch at least one influencer campaign in the following year. Others have claimed that the industry of influencer marketing could soon balloon to $5-10 billion dollars in spend.
